| I have not written an entry since May of 2007. That is hard to believe, but I have not been much in the mood to write. I am now ready to get back to giving my insights about the events taking place in our world today. I hopefully will be back tomorrow with some truly enlightened stuff. | There is an email circulating about participating in a "gas out" on May
15. The email says that one was conducted in April of 1997, I don't
remember it, and it was successful enough to lower the price of
gasoline by 30 cents overnight. I can see where that would be
possible, but unfortunately I do not see where this scheme would affect
the profits of the oil industry.
During the summer months the oil industry must use more expensive
products in the production of gasoline than they do during the rest of
the year. This is because of strict environmental policy. The sharp
increase in gasoline prices during the spring time each year is caused
by the theory of supply and demand. At a certain time each spring the
gasoline producers must empty their tanks of gasoline to prepare them
for storing summer grade gasoline, which cannot be mixed with any other
grade of gasoline. Once again this is because of strict environmental
policy that makes it almost impossible for the oil companies to build
more storage tanks or production facilities.
As the switch is
made to summer grade gasoline the supply of gasoline drops dramatically
at the same time that demand is starting to increase. The law of
supply and demand says that when supply goes down and demand increases
price will increase rapidly. As summer grade gasoline is produced and
supplies begin to go up, never equaling the rise in demand, the price
levels off, but much higher than before because demand is still higher
than supply. If we were successful in getting every person we know to
not buy gasoline on May 15 we would see a rise in supply, which would
bring down the price of gasoline. Unfortunately, we would have to make
sure we did not drive our vehicles on that day because we will have to
replace the fuel we use even if we don't buy gasoline on that
particular day. Only by stopping our travel will demand decrease
sufficiently to make a big enough dent in demand to allow the supply
and demand curves to catch up. Enough on that subject, but hopefully
you understand a little about gasoline prices now.
Now on to the
profits of the oil industry. They would like to sell their more
expensive products as clean product and have a higher margin. Higher
margins mean more profits. If the demand for gasoline decreased, then
oil companies would have more clean products to sell to cosmetic,
cleaning, food, drink, plastic, etc companies. If we really want to
make a dent in the the profits of oil companies we must truly become
serious about using renewable and inexhaustible sources of fuel. We
must also find substitutes for oil products in the production of other
products that we all consume daily.
If you are interested in
possibly lowering the price of gasoline for a little while, then please
participate in this gas out, but remember that you will be hurting many
small businessmen and women who are dependent upon the sell of gasoline
and do not benefit from the oil industries ability to use clean
products that will sell at a higher price than they do in producing
gasoline. You might want to ride your bicycle by your nearest
independent gasoline station and make a small contribution so they can
eat that night.

| This school year is just about to come to a close. We have 2 1/2 weeks left, but only 7 days of instruction and then final exam review and final exams. This summer is going to be quite busy, but I think it will be fun. I will be teaching two dual credit government classes for Lee College during the first summer session and I will be going back to Vermont to teach at the EF Culture Camp at Norwich University.
We get an extra couple of weeks off this summer because of the enforcement of the laws that require public schools to not open until the week before Labor Day. I do believe I will enjoy those few extra days. Time off with pay is always good.
